LASIK vs. ICL: Which Vision Correction Is Right for You?

Both procedures can eliminate your need for glasses — but they're not the same. Here's how to know which one fits your prescription, lifestyle, and corneal health.

The Core Difference

LASIK reshapes the cornea using an excimer laser. ICL places a premium implantable lens inside the eye, in front of your natural lens. Both procedures can eliminate your dependence on glasses or contacts — but the right choice depends on your prescription, corneal thickness, and lifestyle.

When LASIK Makes Sense

LASIK is the most common refractive surgery in the world, and for good reason. It's fast, recovery is measured in days, and outcomes are excellent for the majority of candidates.

You're likely a good LASIK candidate if:

  • Your prescription is between -1.00 and -10.00 diopters of myopia
  • Your corneas are of adequate thickness (measured at your consultation)
  • You don't have significant dry eye
  • You're 21 or older with a stable prescription for 1–2 years
  • When ICL Is the Better Choice

ICL shines when LASIK can't safely treat you — typically because of a very high prescription, thin corneas, or dry eye tendencies.

ICL may be your best option if:

  • Your prescription exceeds -6.00 (and especially beyond -8.00)
  • You've been told your corneas are too thin for LASIK
  • You have significant dry eye symptoms
  • You want a reversible procedure (ICL can be removed or replaced)
  • The Reversibility Advantage

One underappreciated advantage of ICL: it's reversible. Unlike LASIK, which permanently reshapes corneal tissue, ICL can be removed or replaced if your prescription changes significantly in the future. For younger patients who may face continued prescription changes, this is a meaningful difference.
